WOMEN POWER EMBODIED BY THE BENINESE AMAZON
Photo by WPH n.e.V, taken in Cotonou (Benin) on December 20, 2025
DESCRIPTION
The Amazon statue represents the largest and strongest female army in the world in the Kingdom of Danxomè, also known as the Kingdom of Dahomey, now Benin Republic.
This female army was founded during the reign of Tassi Hangbé (from 1708 to 1711), restructured by King Guézo, and called “Agoodjié” or “Minions.” The Amazon monument is made of metal with a bronze coating, weighs 150 tons, and stands 30 meters tall, not including the base.
Among other things, the statue symbolizes the historical power of Benin's women, which is intended to serve as a model for present and future generations. It also embodies the values of courage, bravery, and patriotism.
The statue was erected in honor of the warrior women of Benin, from past and present Beninese History.
